UNRWA: Israel Uses Starvation as Weapon Against Civilians, 1M Children

(MENAFN) The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) has once again accused Israeli authorities of weaponizing hunger against Gaza's civilian population, amid escalating humanitarian devastation in the enclave.

In a statement posted Sunday on X, UNRWA declared: “The Israeli Authorities are starving civilians in Gaza. Among them are 1 million children.”

The agency reiterated its urgent demand for an end to Israel's blockade: “Lift the siege: allow UNRWA to bring in food and medicines.”

Despite clear international legal obligations to protect civilians and ensure humanitarian aid access, Israel has enforced a total siege on Gaza since March 2. The blockade has included strikes on aid convoys, closure of key border crossings, and attacks on food distribution sites—measures widely condemned as collective punishment and possible war crimes.

Gaza’s Health Ministry reports that dozens of children have already succumbed to starvation and dehydration. With healthcare infrastructure in collapse and severe food shortages ongoing, hundreds of thousands more face imminent risk.

On Saturday alone, at least 136 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes, according to Palestinian officials. Among the victims were 38 people gathered to receive aid and three children who died from extreme malnutrition.

Since the conflict intensified in October 2023, nearly 59,000 Palestinians—primarily women and children—have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza. The months of unrelenting bombardment have ravaged the territory, crippled its health system, and pushed its population toward famine.
