Russia, Ukraine Finalize Another Prisoner Exchange Deal

(MENAFN) On Friday, the Russian Defense Ministry announced another prisoner of war exchange with Ukraine, fulfilling agreements reached during the June 2 talks in Istanbul.

The ministry confirmed that both sides swapped equal numbers of servicemen but did not reveal the exact figures involved in the exchange.

According to the statement, Russian soldiers returned from captivity are now in Belarus, where they are undergoing medical treatment and psychological care. Following this initial phase, the soldiers will be moved to medical facilities in Russia for further rehabilitation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also verified the exchange, noting that many of the released troops had been held captive by Russia for more than two years.

“Most of the warriors returning today from Russian captivity had been held for over two years. And now, at last, they are home,” Zelenskyy wrote on X.

He specified that the freed soldiers included defenders from regions such as Mariupol, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv, representing Ukraine’s military forces, National Guard, and Border Guard Service.

The June 2 Istanbul negotiations led to several humanitarian agreements, including this prisoner swap. These talks followed the initial round in May, marking the first direct discussions between Russia and Ukraine in three years.
