White House Weighs Inviting Zelenskyy to Putin-Trump Meeting

(MENAFN) The White House is reportedly weighing the possibility of inviting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Alaska, where Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump are scheduled to meet to discuss ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict, media reported Sunday.

Citing a senior US official and anonymous sources familiar with internal talks, media said discussions are ongoing but no formal plans for Zelenskyy’s visit have been finalized. The report noted that while it is uncertain if Zelenskyy will attend, his presence is “absolutely” possible.

“Everyone is very hopeful that would happen,” the senior US official told media.

Additionally, a senior White House official told the outlet that Trump remains open to a trilateral meeting involving Putin and Zelenskyy.

“Right now, the White House is focusing on planning the bilateral meeting requested by President Putin,” the official added, according to the report.

This development comes as Trump and Putin prepare for their first in-person meeting between sitting Russian and US presidents since June 2021, when Putin met then-President Joe Biden in Geneva. Their Alaska summit is set for Friday, aiming to address the ongoing armed conflict in Ukraine.

On Saturday, European leaders applauded Trump’s push to end the war but emphasized that any resolution must safeguard Kyiv and Europe’s “vital security interests.”

“The path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine,” their statement declared.

Meanwhile, after a Moscow meeting with Emirati leader Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Thursday, Putin told reporters he had no objections to a trilateral meeting with Zelenskyy but stressed the importance of creating the right conditions for such negotiations.
